Herd sweeps Tulane in rain-shortened series

CHARLESTON, W.Va.— The Thundering Herd plated the go-ahead run just before rain struck and swept a pair of games from Tulane in a weather-shortened series over the weekend.

Marshall topped the Green Wave 2-1 in seven innings on Saturday before the skies opened up and washed out the rest of the day. The game was scheduled to resume in the top of the eighth inning Sunday but field conditions would not allow the game to be completed or the series finale to be played.

The Herd waited until what turned out to be its final out before scoring the winning run. With the game tied at 1-1, Aaron Bossi started the rally with a two-out double down the left-field line. Robert Fajardo laced the first pitch he saw into left field driving in Bossi and giving Marshall the 2-1 lead.

Marshall got another quality start from Matt Margaritonda, who threw 6 2/3 innings, struck out eight and allowed just three hits.

The Herd is now 5-6 in C-USA and has won its second conference series of four this season. Marshall will next face Florida Atlantic in conference play Friday in Beckley.

The Herd will host Akron at the Kennedy Center Field on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
