Calhoun County blaze remains undetermined

GRANTSVILLE, W.Va. — When fire crews arrived on the scene of a deadly blaze in Calhoun County Saturday night there was little they could do to save anyone inside.

“They advised when they arrived at the scene is was heavily involved in fire,” said Assistant State Fire Marshal Jason Baltic. “As of right now, the cause is undetermined.”

Three people were pulled from the ashes. Their bodies are now at the medical examiner’s office in Charleston.  Baltic said at this point they are awaiting positive identification from the Medical Examiner before releasing the names of the victims. Indications are the victims were residents of the home, possibly a grandmother, her son, and her granddaughter.

“The first story was cinder block construction and the second story was wood frame,” Baltic said. “But it was heavily involved in fire when the fire department arrived.”

The location of the house was about eight miles outside the county seat of Grantsville.

Previous  3/30/2014  Three people died in a Saturday night house fire in Calhoun County, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

The blaze in Grantsville on Leading Creek Road was first spotted around 9 p.m. All three people living in inside—a 90-year-old woman, her 60-year-old son and 40-year-old disabled granddaughter—were unable to make it out safely.

There’s no official word on what started the fire, but initial reports pointed toward a space heater.
