Bussie, Holmes earn All-America honorable mentions

Sophomore guard Bria Holmes joined senior center Asya Bussie among the AP All-American honorable mentions.

 

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Asya Bussie and Bria Holmes, who led West Virginia to a school-record 30 wins and the Big 12 regular-season title, were honorable-mention selections to the Associated Press All-America team Tuesday.

The sophomore guard Holmes averaged 15.2 points and made a team-best 47 steals. She was a unanimous All-Big 12 selection who scored in double figures 25 times, becoming the 14th player in program history to reach 500 points in a season.

The senior Bussie averaged 12.9 points and 7.8 rebounds, capped by a 21-point second half in a 76-67 NCAA second- round loss at LSU.

A team co-captain who previously earned All-Big 12 first-team honors as well as a spot on the Big 12 All-Defensive team, Bussie closed her career as No. 11 on the WVU career scoring list with 1,497. She finished second in in blocks (270) and offensive rebounds (382).

Three other Mountaineers previously earned AP All-America honorable mention status: Yolanda Paige in 2005, Meg Bulger in 2006 and Olayinka Sanni in 2008.

AP All-American: Stanford’s Chiney Ogwumike, Connecticut’s Breanna Stewart, Baylor’s Odyssey Sims, Notre Dame’s Kayla McBride and Maryland’s Alyssa Thomas.
Second-team: Connecticut’s Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley, Notre Dame’s Jewell Loyd, Louisville’s Shoni Schimmel and Nebraska’s Jordan Hooper.
Third-team: South Carolina’s Tiffany Mitchell, Penn State’s Maggie Lucas, Duke’s Tricia Liston and Elizabeth Williams and Notre Dame’s Natalie Achonwa.
