Relief on the way; DOH addresses another road slip

ALUM CREEK, W.Va. — A section of Coal River Road, closed since December after the highway began slipping, could be cleared by the middle of next week, according to the state Division of Highways.

The closure has forced residents to take a 20-mile detour, while the DOH worked through issues with a property owner concerning repair work.

DOH crews began a temporary solution Thursday.

“We’ve worked with property owners who have given us right of entry now. So we’ll able to start a grade and drain project on there to allow those residents access,” state DOH spokesman Brent Walker said.

The agency was scheduled to meet with residents Thursday night about the project.

Walker said a more permanent fix to the road is coming: “We’re still working on the best way to do that.”

The DOH is hopeful the temporary road can be open by the middle of next week.

“(Residents) won’t have to drive that long detour anymore,” Walker said. “They’ll have (road) access now through that.”
