Applications due this weekend for West Virginia Scholar Program

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — The application deadline for the 2014 MVB Bank West Virginia Scholar Program, a chance for a full, four-year scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan, is midnight on Saturday.

“This really is a wonderful program,” said Bob Skinner, vice president of advancement for West Virginia Wesleyan, on Friday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

Current high school juniors in West Virginia can apply.

The first prize is a four-year scholarship, valued at $125,000, for undergraduate study at West Virginia Wesleyan.  It includes tuition, fees, room and board.  The winner must enroll for the Fall 2015 semester.

The second prize is a four-year $5,000 scholarship at West Virginia Wesleyan, while the third prize is a four-year $2,500 scholarship.

Applications are available here.

As of Friday morning, more than 50 applications had been submitted.  “The most important thing about that application, we always tell folks, is the essay,” said Skinner.

“That’s always the compelling part of the competition.  People love to hear about the stories and the compelling case as to why that student thinks that they’re a deserving candidate for the scholarship,” he said.

The West Virginia Scholar Program is now in its sixth year.

In addition to MVB Bank, West Virginia Wesleyan and MetroNews, the sponsors for the 2014 West Virginia Scholar Program are the West Virginia Forestry Association, the West Virginia Hospital Association and Friends of Coal.
