FORT WORTH, Texas — Preston Morrison tossed a one-hitter as TCU beat West Virginia 8-0 in Saturday’s first game, and the Horned Frogs won the nightcap 3-1 to finish off a three-game weekend sweep.
West Virginia (16-11, 2-3 Big 12), hoping to rebound from Friday’s ninth-inning collapse, wound up being dominated and becoming the victim of its first sweep since joining the new conference. Likewise, TCU (19-12, 5-4) celebrated its first sweep as a Big 12 member.
The sidearmer Morrison (3-3) pitched the 18th one-hitter in TCU history, allowing only a first-inning walk and a seventh-inning single—both to Bobby Boyd. He struck out seven and delivered his second complete game of the season.
West Virginia’s Sean Carley (5-1) was no match, allowing five runs on 10 hits in five innings. Carley struck out one and did not issue a walk.
The Frogs outhit West Virginia 16-1 in the opener.
TCU 3, West Virginia 1 (2nd game)
Despite turning a triple play in the bottom of the third, the Mountaineers couldn’t salvage a victory.
TCU led 1-0 and had runners on first and second attempting a double steal when Boomer White lined to WVU shortstop Taylor Munden. He touched second base and threw to first base to end the inning.
That was the last pitch for left-hander John Means who left after allowing five hits and throwing only 39 pitches.
After the Mountaineers squared the game at 1-all on Michael Constantini’s RBI single in the fifth, TCU scored twice against Michael Bennett (2-2) in the bottom half. It was the second loss in 24 hours for Bennett, who couldn’t halt TCU’s ninth-inning rally the previous night.
Tyler Alexander (4-3) delivered 2 2/3 innings of relief for the Frogs before Riley Ferrell fanned four batters over two perfect innings for his fourth save.
Max Nogay and Constantini had two hits each for the Mountaineers, who visit Penn State on Tuesday before hodtoing Oklahoma State next weekend at Hawley Field.
