Morgantown meeting to focus on underage and high risk drinking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Underage and high risk drinking will be the focus of a town hall meeting involving Morgantown city officials and those with West Virginia University later this week.

“It’s not that people can’t drink, that’s not what we’re talking about.  It’s just that, when you do drink, you drink responsibly,” said Cathy Yura, WVU assistant vice president for student wellness, who works in the WELLWVU Carruth Center of Psychological and Psychiatric Services.

“We really do want to create an environment where people can have a good time and not have regret in the morning.”

That town hall meeting, “Underage and High Risk Drinking: A Solution-Based Town Hall Dialogue,” will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at WVU’s Ming Hsieh Hall in Morgantown.

Those who are scheduled to be involved include Evan McIntyre, WVU Interfraternity Council president; Bob Roberts, WVU police chief; Jenny Selin, Morgantown mayor; Dr. Charles Whiteman, ER physician, Ruby Memorial Hospital; Gig Robinson, West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration and Helen Stubs, EverFi vice president for higher education.

WVU and the City of Morgantown are co-sponsoring the town hall meeting with support from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
