Nearly half the state under freeze warning tonight

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Only two days after the mercury in West Virginia broke 80 temperatures will plummet again Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for 24 counties stretching from the Ohio River along U.S. Route 50 and south through the Kanawha Valley and southern coalfields. The warning is from 10 p.m. Tuesday stretching to10 a.m. Wednesday.

“We’ve got temperatures that will be dropping across the state into the 20s or low 30s in some areas,” said Meteorologist Mike Zwier with the Charleston Weather Bureau. “Since we had that warmer weather, trees are starting to leaf and get some blossoms. If you have any of those tender plants you could bring inside, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea.”

A cold front is pushing into West Virginia and will bring a mix of rain and snow.  Behind the cold front will be chilly temperatures which will last through mid-week.

“By Wednesday we’ll start to warm up a little bit,” said Zwier. “By the weekend back up to 70 degrees.”

Twenty-three counties are under the freeze warning including Wayne, Cabell, Mason, Jackson, Wood, Pleasants, Tyler, Lincoln, Putnam, Kanawha, Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Ritchie, Doddridge, Mingo, Logan, Boone, Clay, Braxton, Gilmer, Lewis, Harrison and Taylor counties.
