Hurricane returned seven starters from last year’s state championship team, including pitcher Courtney Rogers.

Defending Class AAA softball state champion Hurricane entered Tuesday with an undefeated 12-0 record as the Redskins are ranked No. 1 in the state. Hurricane last week survived a 9-8 win over Cabell Midland, scoring the winning run on a bases loaded wild-pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Redskins returned seven starters from last year’s state championship team, including reigning state payer of the year Courtney Rogers. Rogers posted a 21-3 record a year ago, with a 2.32 ERA and .492 batting average.

The Pioneers have taken home the Class AA state championship for the last two seasons – they’re trying to become the first Class AA team to complete the three-peat since Sissonville did so from 2000-2002. Wayne entered the week with an 8-4 overall record and No. 1 ranking in the state.

One of those losses, however, came against Class AAA No. 1 Hurricane 3-0 in a showdown of pitchers as the Redskins’ Courtney Rogers faced off against Wayne’s Jessie Rowe. At one point, the two pitchers retired 21 hitters in a row. Wayne also owns an impressive 4-3 win over Class AA No. 2 Herbert Hoover from early in the season.

The Bison entered this season as the three-time defending Class A state champions. After an initial 1-5 start against several Class AAA and Class AA opponents, the Bison have rolled off three straight wins and entered Tuesday with a 4-5 record.

Chelsey Parkins and Ali Burdette are at the core of Buffalo’s veteran group this season – the pair combined for 31 wins in 2013. Buffalo won all three of its state tournament games last year by 1-0 scores.

actually they were 12-1 going into this. A 2-0 loss to St. Albans on Wednesday evening. There was two plays that were called incorrectly. Both went in favor of SAHS. One was a runner beat at first, and it was clear that Madison Hebb made the play with her foot on the bag, and ball in glove with a 3 foot gape between the runner, and first base to which I have the photo. The second was a tag made on a runner by Cassi Sargent.
