Surprised Bussie ‘just started crying’ when Lynx drafted her at No. 15

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Asya Bussie’s agent advised her she could last into the third round of the WNBA draft, so the West Virginia center was pleasantly blind-sided when the Minnesota Lynx drafted her 15th overall with the third pick of the second round.

“The whole day I was a wreck, trying to figure out if I was going to be drafted,” Bussie said in joining the MetroNews “Sportsline” crew Tuesday night. “I didn’t think I would be nervous, but I was. I just watched the draft with some friends, and waited for my named to be called. Once I saw it was called I just started crying.”

She received no forewarning from the Lynx, no phone call ahead of her draft slot. Instead, Bussie learned her destination along with others following the draft.

“It was a shock,” she said.

Bussie was the second Big 12 player selected on Monday, following No. 2 overall pick Odyssey Sims of Baylor. The rookies must make a rapid transition with the WNBA season scheduled to begin May 16.

Though Bussie claimed she doesn’t know much about the Minneapolis area, she said team officials “just told me to bring a heavy coat.”
