Toms Toes Day

University of Charleston students went bare-footed for a reason Tuesday.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – University of Charleston students dared to go bare on a cold, snowy day. They were all bundled up except for their feet. Tuesday was Toms Toes Day.

It’s part of the University’s Live the Mission week, an event aimed at making students aware of what’s going on in their community and around the world.

This is the second year the Toms Club has sponsored the Toes Day. Students are urged to go barefoot to see what it’s like for millions of people around the world who don’t own a pair of shoes.

“The weather isn’t great outside but it kind of makes it more realistic because today is all about awareness and just getting involved in the Toms mission. For every [Toms] shoe that you buy, they give away a pair to someone who is in need,” explained Sam Scott the president of the UC Toms Club.

Members of the club set up in Geary Student Union and had games and giveaways for students. They could also purchase a pair of Toms.

“You’re getting something out of it and you’re providing shoes for someone else,” according to Scott.

He said the goal is to put shoes, on as many people, as possible. Currently 740-million across the globe suffer from hook worm, a soil transmitted disease, which could be wiped out, if everyone had at least one pair of shoes.

Scott said Toes Day is an eye opener for many students and gets them thinking about helping others.
