Earth Day comes early in Fayette County

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — Earth Day is this coming Tuesday. On Saturday the town of Fayetteville will celebrate early. For the ninth year the Fayette County Courthouse will play host to New River Earth Day.

Organizer April Storm said it’s all about reaching out to the community, young, old and everyone in between.

“Get them to learn more about the environment, what’s around them, the earth, why we need to be sustainable,” she said.

The event gets underway at 11 a.m. with an Easter egg hunt at Fayetteville Town Park. The plastic eggs the kids will be searching for will be recycled eggs used in past hunts.

At noon, the celebration moves to the lawn of the county courthouse where there will be live music, food, a petting zoo, games, crafts and conservation activities.

Storm said when many children are physically attached to their cell phones and video games, this is an event that gets them back to nature.

“[We want to] get these kids back out there and say, ‘Hey, we live here. This is important. We need to take care of it for future generations,'” explained Storm.

The celebration will also include a swap meet and recycling/composting demonstrations.
