Greenbrier sheriff ‘not ruling anything out’ in discovery of human remains

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The Greenbrier County sheriff said Monday his department isn’t ready to rule out anything on the discovery of human remains last week just outside the city limits of White Sulphur Springs.

Sheriff Jan Cahill said a resident rummaging for old bottles in a long abandoned dump site made the discovery Friday.

“We don’t want to speculate or be too premature, but we do think we’re looking at a male, young to middle aged and small in stature,” Cahill said. “Probably been there about a year and maybe beyond that.”

The state Medical Examiner’s Office is taking a look at the remains to determine an identity. Cahill said they’ve checked all missing persons reports, but don’t have any recent reports that match the description.

“There’s a couple of folks if you go back several, several years they might meet the general description,” Cahill said. “We are reaching out to other agencies in the region to check their files and reports and reaching out to media folks, it may be somebody whose gone unreported.”

The location of the body however, makes it possible the remains could be from anywhere.

“The location of this find is very close to the railroad tracks, very close to the interstate, very close to a rest stop, and very close to the main street in White Sulphur,” Cahill said. “We’re not ruling anything out.”
