CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Students and staff from Glenville State College spent part of their Earth Day helping out the planet. Tuesday 20 people from Glenville planted shrubs and mulched around the Yeager Airport sign and planted flowers near the terminal as part of a community service project.
It all got started back in 2007 according to Glenville staff member Marlon Henry when the airport was undergoing a major earth removal project.
“We brought a lot of students out here and,along the back side of the hill we planted a lot of trees down there,” explained Henry.” We’ve just kept coming back every year to show our support for it and that Glenville State College can outreach to more than just the Glenville area.”
Those saplings they planted seven years ago are now young trees that keep the hillside from eroding into the valley below.
Henry said it’s important the students learn to give back and see their contribution come to life.
“In a year from now, five years from now, 10 years from now, it hits home when you see the impact as you drive by where you mulched, where you planted shrubs. It’s a great way to give back and beautify the state of West Virginia,” explained Henry.
Earth Day celebrated on April 22 is aimed at supporting environmental protection worldwide.
The students said they’ll be back again next year to take on another beatification project.
