Leftwich & Pennington to coach Marshall’s Green-White game

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Retired NFL quarterbacks and Marshall University legends Byron Leftwich and Chad Pennington will serve as coaches during the Green-White spring game Saturday.

Both Leftwich and Pennington, who will take one snap each themselves, formed their teams by drafting current players.

“They look pretty equal at this point,” said Doc Holliday, Marshall University head coach of the lineups. Rakeem Cato, the Herd’s starting quarterback, will reportedly lead Pennington’s team. Retired All-Pro receiver Randy Moss is also expected to make an appearance.

“We’ve got all the greats coming back,” Holliday said.

The Thundering Herd finished last season 10-4, including a Military Bowl win over Maryland. Marshall opens the 2014 season on the road at Miami (Ohio) on Aug. 30.

“It’s just an exciting time right now in Huntington,” said Holliday.  “We’re looking at having a really good football team.”

The Green-White game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Three hours before the game, Leftwich will speak at the annual fountain ceremony at Marshall’s Student Center along with Sam Botek, a member of the Young Thundering Herd in 1971.
