FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The contract of West Virginia University president E. Gordon Gee has yet to be finalized.
“He’s extracting himself from some of his other commitments,” state Higher Education Chancellor Dr. Paul Hill told MetroNews Friday. “While those details are being ironed out it’s just taking a little more time to finalize the contract.”
Hill said he had originally hoped to have Gee’s deal with the WVU Board of Governors ready for review by the state Higher Education Policy Commission before Friday’s meeting at Fairmont State University. Though that deadline wasn’t met, Hill said there are no real hangups.
“None whatsoever, it’s just regular contract stuff that just can’t be done immediately,” the chancellor said.
Gee was hired by WVU in March just a few months after agreeing to serve as president while the search took place for a permanent president after Jim Clements went to Clemson. Gee was WVU’s president in the 1980s. His latest presidential role was at Ohio State.
Hill said the contract is close to being done.
“We’re just not quite there yet. I’m sure it will be taken up at the next meeting and finalized,” he said.
The next regular meeting of the HEPC is scheduled for August.
The terms of the deal will be made public once it’s finalized.
