Prep baseball notebook: St. Marys entering the week 17-1

ST. MARYS, W.Va. — St. Marys has jumped to the top of Class A with a 17-1 record on the year with that only loss coming earlier this month to Ravenswood, albeit by a peculiar 21-8 score.

Ed Wilson, in his 25th year at the helm with the Blue Devils, has a mentally tough squad overall.

“I think it comes down to the mental game – when it comes to the game, you have to be mentally ready,” he said. “We have the pitching and the hitting coming. Right now, we’re just kinda in it.”

In a region with Class A title contenders Madonna and Magnolia, the Blue Devils will have keep things rolling at the same level through the postseason.

“Our pitching as been on so far this year – It’s kept us in some games,” Wilson said. “If we can get our guys hitting at one time, we’d be unstoppable, but sometimes you’ll have a couple guys hitting and then a couple guys not swinging the bats.”

The Blue Devils back on Friday picked up another impressive victory, beating 15-win Notre Dame on 8-7. St. Marys has two intriguing matchups scheduled for this week against Gilmer County and Magnolia.
