Three schools named Schools of Excellence

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Three schools have been named West Virginia Schools of Excellence for the upcoming academic year.  They are Maxwell Hill Elementary School in Raleigh County, Brandywine Elementary School in Pendleton County and George Washington Elementary School in Putnam County.

Officials with the state Department of Education announced the three Schools of Excellence for the 2014-2015 academic year on Thursday.

“I offer my congratulations to the principals, teachers, parents and students for their hard work and dedication to helping their school become a School of Excellence,” said Jim Phares, state superintendent of schools, in a statement.  “These schools have shown how to continually exceed the academic bar and they deserve this recognition.”

School factors like a rigorous and challenging curriculum, a safe and drug-free learning environment, participatory leadership, active teaching and learning and documented student achievement are among those considered when the selections for Schools of Excellence are made.

The winning schools will be recognized during an Oct. 9 banquet in Charleston.
