Father of Ted Cruz to speak in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The father of a possible 2016 Republican Presidential contender has some predictions for 2014.

Pastor Rafael Cruz was a guest on Friday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

“We’re going to see a Republican sweep, a conservative sweep in the November election all across the board,” said Pastor Rafael Cruz on Friday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”

“I think we’re going to re-take the Senate, re-take the Senate by a substantial majority and we’re going to start to see more constitutional conservatives both at the federal level and at the state level.”

Cruz, who leads a church in Dallas, was in West Virginia ahead of Saturday night’s Lincoln Day Dinner — a fundraiser for the Republican Executive Committee.  The dinner was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center.

Rafael Cruz was born in Cuba and initially fought for Fidel Castro’s revolution.  “We all followed him.  We thought he was going to be our liberator,” said Cruz who, later in his life, spoke out against Castro’s regime after arriving in the United States.

His son, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 and, since then, has become a key leader in the Tea Party movement.

Already, speculation is swirling about his political future.  “That’s in God’s hands,” said Rafael Cruz, one of his son’s key advisers, when asked about his prospects.  “Right now, he’s got his hands full in the Senate and he’s trying to fight all these battles that keep coming up.”
