Flooding risk to move out of state by Friday

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Cooler temperatures were in the forecast for the weekend in West Virginia after heavy rain on Thursday and into Thursday night in much of West Virginia.

As of Thursday afternoon, flood watches from the National Weather Service were in effect for 49 counties, while severe thunderstorm watches had been issued for Berkeley, Jefferson, Hampshire, Morgan and Hardy counties.

Greg Guillot, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the greatest risks for flash flooding on Thursday were those counties in the Eastern Mountains along with the eastern mountain counties.  “Those areas have seen repeated rainfall over the past few days and those areas are already seeing saturated moistures,” he said.

The rain was expected to exit West Virginia by Friday morning.

“Behind the front, temperatures are certainly going to be cooler versus temperatures that we’ve seen here in recent days — close to 90 (degrees),” said Guillot.  For the weekend, “It’s looking like temperatures will only be in the 60s for most.”

Guillot was a guest on Thursday’s MetroNews “Talkline.”
