Former Williamson mayor sentenced for lying to investigators

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A former Williamson mayor will be sentenced in August for lying to federal investigators.

On Thursday, Darrin McCormick was in U.S. District Court in Charleston to plead guilty to making a false statement to the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service during an investigation focused on Aracoma Contracting.

McCormick was a former manager at the Bank of Mingo branch in Williamson where officials with Aracoma Contracting structured their withdrawals to evade federal reporting requirements, keep much of the payroll off the books and bribe a workers’ compensation auditor.

The company itself has since plead guilty to a list of charges.

McCormick resigned from his role as mayor in Williamson last month shortly before he was named in a federal information filing, indicating his cooperation with federal investigators on the false statement charge.

He could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and forced to pay up to $250,000 in fines on Aug. 28.
