CHARLESTON, W.Va. — There were a lot of comings and goings at the state’s busiest airport Friday as residents prepared to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday.
Tish Whitney was at Yeager Airport in Charleston to pick up a rental to head north.
“We’re heading to Wellesley, Massachusetts and Cape Cod for a couple of weeks to enjoy a very cool, cold spring vacation on the Cape,” she said.
She won’t have to make the trip alone.
“We’ll have our two dogs with us in the car,” she laughed.
She was hoping for a smooth travel day. That’s exactly what Ben Richardson and his family from New York didn’t get. They left Brooklyn Thursday morning but didn’t arrive in Charleston until 24-hours later.
“We had a delay at JFK for a couple hours. We missed our connection in Dulles. Then a tornado warning came and 90 percent of United’s flights out of Dulles were cancelled,” he explained.
Richardson, his wife and 20-month old daughter had to spend the night in Washington, D.C. and grab a flight first thing Friday.
“(Our trip) is one day shorter but we are happy to be here,” he let out a sigh of relief.
Nancy Dean made her way via air to Charleston on Thursday.
“I did it the easy way. It cost a ton of bucks but it was a non-stop from Houston to Charleston,” she said.
Dean will spend her Memorial Day with family.
Meanwhile, Charlie White arrived back home in Charleston Friday morning after a trip out west. He said he had a smooth flight but not the kind of weather he was hoping for.
“I went to California to get warm and had to come home to get warm! It’s 10 or 15 degrees warmer here than it is in San Francisco,” he said.
In fact, after a cold, harsh winter, everyone is looking forward to warmer weather and summer pursuits.
Rosetta Smith was at Yeager Airport to pick up her husband from a business trip. She was ready to hit the water.
“We’re going to go to the Williams River and relax!”
The National Weather Service out of Charleston is forecasting a beautiful weekend here in West Virginia with lots of sun and highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.
