Class AAA Region 1 baseball semifinal postgame: Morgantown 7, Preston 4

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown advanced in baseball regional play with 7-4 win over Preston on Tuesday night from Mylan Park. The Mohigans opened up a 5-1 lead heading into the sixth inning before the Knights closed the gap to 5-4 with three runs.

“It was two good teams going at it, we fought hard and got some bunts down when we needed to,” said Morgantown head coach Mark McCarty. “We had some huge defensive plays in pressure situations, especially our third baseman.”

Preston led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning before thunderstorms delayed the game for nearly two hours. The win puts the Mohigans one step away from getting into the state tournament next week.

“We’ve been here before lots of times and haven’t been able to get over that hump, maybe with this team we can,” McCarty said. “I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder of a team. We obviously haven’t been to the state tournament in Morgantown since 1976, it would mean a heck of a lot to our program to finally get over that hump.”

Morgantown will host Wheeling Park in the regional final on Thursday night. The complete postgame interview with McCarty is posted above.
