CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Weather Service out of Charleston has issued a Flash Flood Watch starting Wednesday at 2 p.m. through Thursday evening. Meteorologist John Victory said much of the state is in a swampy mix.
“We have a very summer-like atmosphere, warm and very moist,” Victory explained. “We’re going to pop quite a few thunderstorms. Some of those storms will contain locally heavy rain.”
As the storm system slows down late Wednesday into Thursday some storms could drop as much as an inch of rain an hour. There could also be repetitive showers that soak the ground. Victory stressed that could cause some problems.
“Under these thunderstorms you can have rapid rising of stream and creeks that could cause some rapid flooding,” the meteorologist said.
Not all of West Virginia is under the Flash Flood Watch. Both panhandles and southeastern West Virginia will avoid potential flooding.
The rain should taper off Thursday evening, bringing in a much brighter weekend forecast.
“From Friday into the weekend, it will be a drier, kind of a refreshing air mass compared to this mid-summer air mass we have right now,” according to Victory.
We’re looking at high’s around 80-degrees straight through the weekend.
