BECKLEY, W.Va. — An inmate at the Southern Regional Jail in Beckley died at a Charleston hospital Tuesday evening after being involved in a fight at the jail.

Carlos McMillion

State Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety spokesman Larry Messina said Carlos McMillion, 51, suffered injuries from an altercation Saturday with fellow inmate Geremy West, 21.

Messina said two investigations are underway.

“Jail authorities are conducting an internal investigation. The State Police are also investigating. It’s my understanding the State Police have been conducting interviews of staff and others,” Messina said.

Troopers plan to share the information they gather with the Raleigh County prosecutor for any possible charges.

Geremy West

McMillion was arrested May 11 in Raleigh County on a first-degree robbery charge. West was arrested May 9 after having his bond revoked in Mercer County on burglary, grand larceny and conspiracy charges.

McMillion was initially taken to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital Saturday before being transferred to CAMC General.

West is in jail for breaking in my house last May, the only charges against him.

...were against him anyway. I'd say a lot more prison time now.

  • Tom

51? He looked 70 in his mugshot.

Looks like a win win situation to me. Career criminal dead, and future career criminal doing life.the only thing that would have made this story better is if the other guy would have died too.

How much you want to bet that soon, when their grieving ends, McMillion's family will file an eight digit lawsuit against the state for his death while in custody?

    • northforkfisher

And they'll win hands down. Especially if they have a jury trial.

      • early cuylers

How do you figure the jail is at fault?

  • Jason R.

Well, that's one way to take out the trash.
