A great day to be a Mountaineer fisherman

Tony Caridi of MetroNews hoists a nice New River smallmouth bass caught on his first float trip.

Tony Caridi is known for a lot of things, but none more than his signature phrase, “It’s a great day to be a Mountaineer wherever you may be.”  The statement typically signifies a big win for the Mountaineers.  But Caridi this week learned a little more about just how great it is to be a Mountaineer in the heart of Mountaineer country.

Tony accepted an invitation from his buddy Dino Colombo for a float fishing trip on West Virginia’s New River.  The pair hooked up with New River Trophy Outfitters for a day of smallmouth fishing in picture perfect conditions.

“I caught a couple, but my boy Dino caught about 20,” laughed Caridi.

Guides for the three boat trip were Troy Stiffler, owner and operator of New River Trophy Outfitters, Sammy Pugh, and Chris Snider.  Anglers included Kurt Henkins, Adam Henkins, Doug Goodwin, and Natural Resources Commissioner Dave Truban.

Although Tony had fished before, it was his first float trip on the New River. It was an amazing discovery despite living within a three hour drive for the past 30 years.  Tony said he learned what most folks cherish about a float trip on the New.  Isolation, scenery, and low stress are automatics. The fishing isn’t bad either.

“I could do that every day and never catch a fish and be happy,” he said.

It may be a great day to be a Mountaineer wherever you may be, but it’s always just a little bit better if you’re float fishing the New River.
