Reward being offered in Fayette arson cases

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department is hoping the public will help them with an ongoing investigation into a rash of arson fires in two different areas of the county.

Since March, six or seven arson fires have been reported. They are concentrated in an area along Route 61 and also in the Minden area. To sweeten the pot, Crime Stoppers of Raleigh and Fayette counties and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office have posted a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

“It’s just odd a structure doesn’t have any power, water, gas, or anything hooked to it would just burn,” said Sheriff Steve Kessler. “Some of these have been in very isolated areas.”

All of the structures which are suspected to be the target of arson have burned to the ground. However, Kessler said they are having trouble finding evidence of the start.

“We’re not sure if anything was used to set the fires, like gasoline,” he said. “They were burned completely down.”

The sheriff’s department has distributed fliers seeking information and is asking anybody with knowledge of the fires to call the sheriff’s department to aid in the investigation.
