CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Bob Mullett, game director of the North-South Football Classic, has announced the seventh class of the West Virginia Athletic Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame. The 2014 class will induct two new members, raising the overall membership to 34 former coaches and athletes honored since 2008.
Steve Edwards, Sr., the former head football coach at George Washington High School, won the 1982 Class AAA state championship for the Patriots and the football stadium at the high school is named in his honor. Edwards was also the head coach of the Charleston Rockets and West Virginia Lightning semi-pro football teams.
Steve Newberry, the former Peterstown High School Pirates multi-sport star, went on to West Virginia University and was a four-year starter for the Mountaineer football team. He is a member of WVU’s all-time team for 1980 – 1989 and was elected to the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Edwards and Newberry each participated in the North-South Football Classic as players and coaches. Edwards played in the 1955 game and was head coach of the South in 1978. Newberry played for the South in 1980 and was an assistant coach under Don Jackson in 2000.
Formal induction ceremonies will be held at West Virginia State University in Institute on Saturday, June 21 at 1:45pm. Edwards and Newberry will also be introduced at the North-South Football Classic at Laidley Field, prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff.
