Xavier forward Justin Martin (20), who averaged 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds last season, tweeted that he will transfer to SMU over interest from West Virginia and Florida State.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — When Xavier forward Justin Martin went “Pony Up!!!!” on Twitter late Tuesday night, SMU’s gain became West Virginia’s chagrin.

The 6-foot-6 Martin, a graduate transfer with versatile skills and one year of eligibility remaining, was coveted by the Mountaineers following the departures of Eron Harris and Terry Henderson. After averaging 11.7 points and 5.2 rebounds as a junior for Xavier’s team that reached the NCAA play-in round, Martin was viewed as a player who could step in at shooting guard and small forward for WVU.

Martin previously visited Florida State and was just days away from a scheduled trip to Morgantown. In between, however, he visited Dallas, where a chance to join Larry Brown’s resurgent SMU program resulted in the following tweet:

Pony Up!!!! Im a mustang baby!!!!”

Martin adds to a deep SMU roster that already was generating preseason top-10 buzz and figures to challenge UConn for the American Athletic Conference title. Brown signed the nation’s No. 2 recruit, 6-foot-5 point guard Emmanuel Mudiay, and Texas Tech transfer forward Jordan Tolbert, whose eligibility for next season still requires a waiver.

I think there was 1 Big12 basketball program that didn't have at least one player transfer out. Texas. So who knows why the TT guy or anyone transferred. Harris mumbled something about being closer to home and TH said 0. Everybody's doin it doin it doin it. I doubt that it has anything to do with being yelled at by the coach. Maybe.

  • WVcoal

I don't think WVU "missed out" on anything here.

  • SlamDunk

Hey ...a junior at "Xavier" who only averaged 11 and change as a 6'6 guard .......not a great lose .

  • William

    I love Bobby Huggins

  • Big Larry

The Bob Huggins circus continues to roll on....

    • Mister Man

Thank you for your comment, clown.

  • WVU FAN

Don't you mean Martin missed out on WVU?

Some times its about being a big fish in a little pond... good luck to Martin being the big fish,

For WVU, its keeping the fish in the lake....People like to fish at WVU!!!!

    Let's GOOOOOOO!!!Mountaineeeeers!!!!

  • Rick55

Even though we didn't get him, it's kind if refreshing to see a guy who wants to join a deep team and potentially top 10. Seems like a lot of guys only want to go to a team where they can get PT and not have to learn the craft by playing limited minutes. If he is used as a role player or has limited minutes, it will be interesting to see if he stays at SMU.

    • Olecountry

He only has 1 year of eligibility, he can't transfer anywhere else

WVU didn't miss out on Martin. Huggins pulled the scholarship offer for some reason. Don't ask me why.

Apparently, the new target for Huggs is Billydee Williams, a 6'6" SG from Levelland, Texas' South Plains College. At least that's what Mitch Vingle has reported.

    Here's his highlight video.

The kid has a smooth looking shot and can jump. Oh and the most important thing i saw is he likes to defend the ball.

      • bitcruncher

He looks like a good one. A big guard with some hop would be nice.

  • holgie

OMG. What a suprise he chose to play for Larry Brown instead of Huggins. What in the world was he thinking?

    • Mister Man

These kids know what trolls are. I'm sure they get a kick out of their comments.

  • FNP

It may be hard to believe but kids these days to get on sites like these and read the articles and comments. Anytime Metronews gets their name out there, a kid will google the site to see what is being said. I'm sure all the negativity that is posted on here doesnt really help sway kids to WVU. This would be a better site if they would disable all comments.

    • Robin

      Ever hear of Google alerts?

    • Rick S.

Yes, FNP, I do find it hard to believe. I find it hard to believe that any kids, let alone athletes, spend their days reading news web sites. I could see maybe Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or ESPN. But MetroNews?

      • FNP

If i'm a recruit then i'm constantly paying attention to WV sporting news. Trust me...they pay attention.

    • jeremy F

      thats a very good point

  • Ole Sasquatch

Priority is to get true Mountaineers.

  • Aaron

I think what's interesting is the mention of Jordan Tolbert transferring from Texas Tech. I wonder if he left because of one and done Tubby screams too much?

  • jay zoom

good luck to the man -- he'll be better off at smu rather than with one and done huggins THANKS OLLIE

    • aquarius

have you considered a transfer to smu?
