One dead in Kanawha County fire

JEFFERSON, W.Va. — A man died Saturday morning in an apartment fire in Kanawha County.

Kanawha County Fire Coordinator C.W. Sigman said the victim, 66, was found inside a small garage that had been converted into an apartment. The 3:30 a.m. blaze was on Hampshire Drive in the community of Jefferson.

Sigman said no one lived in the adjacent house. He said there was a smoke alarm on a table in the house but firefighters didn’t find any in the apartment where the victim was located.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office and Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department are investigating. There was no word initially on what started the blaze.

A neighbor noticed the fire and alerted Kanawha County Metro 911.

Sigman said volunteer firefighters from Jefferson, West Side and Lakewood did a good job knocking down the flames.
