DNA sample leads to arrest in connection to 14-year-old case

BECKLEY, W. Va. — U.S. Marshals arrested a man Monday in connection with a 14-year-old cold case.

According to a release from the U.S. Marshals Service, Juan Manuel Pagan was wanted on charges of rape, sexual assault, three counts of burglary, three counts of assault, three counts of making terrorist threats, three counts of false imprisonment, firearms violations and theft stemming from a January 2000 home invasion that involved several victims.

Pagan was arrested without incident outside the home of relatives in the East Park area of Beckley.

In July 2012, when Pagan was released from the Mount Olive Correctional Complex, a DNA sample was taken and entered in the national offender database.

It was later discovered his DNA allegedly matched that recovered from a victim in a 2000 home invasion in Philadelphia, Pa. The victim then allegedly identified Pagan from a photo lineup.

Authorities discovered Pagan was living with relatives in the Beckley area and contacted local marshals to arrange for his arrest.

Pagan awaits extradition in the Southern Regional Jail in Beckley.
