WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — Bridgeport’s Woody Woodward shot a 3-under-par 67 to grab a one-stroke lead after opening day of the West Virginia State Amateur Championship.
The Wake Forest sophomore-to-be made seven birdies on the Greenbrier’s Meadows Course, where the third round will be played Thursday. Wednesday’s second round shifts to the Old White TPC, which also is the venue for Friday’s closing 18.

The University of Charleston’s Harry Howell, a Madison native, fired a 68 and UCF signee Thadd Obecny of Wheeling finished at 69.
The group at 70 included Bluefield State golf coach Nick Dent of White Sulphur Springs, Jeremy Rogers of Buckhannon, Joey Seabright of Wheeling and Michael Mays of Beckley.
Huntington’s Pat Carter, seeking a 14th title, was part of a four-way tie at 71, while defending champ Sam O’Dell of Hurricane was 6-over in a tie for 20th.
