Huntington 20-year-old takes 1-shot lead at midpoint of State Amateur

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — As winds gusted across the Old White TPC course, only one golfer in the State Amateur Championship managed to shoot below par Wednesday.

And that was enough to make Huntington 20-year-old Josh Holmes the second-round leader.

The ex-Marshall golfer fired a 1-under 69 to climb atop the leaderboard at 1-over for the tournament.

First-round leader Woody Woodward of Bridgeport shot a 5-over 75, lowlighted by a double bogey on No. 18 that left the Wake Forest player a stroke back in a tie for second place.

The third round shifts back to the Meadows Course on Thursday before golfers take another crack at the Old White in Friday’s finale.

Holmes, who works at Sugarwood Golf Club in Lavalette, hadn’t enjoyed much luck in his previous two state amateurs. He settled for 35th place in 2012 after failing to make the cut in 2010.

Thadd Obecny II and Harry Howell each shot 74s to remain in contention—Howell tied with Woodward at 2-over and Obecny one shot back in fourth place.
Defending champion Sam O’Dell of Hurricane and 13-time champion Pat Carter each struggled with 6-over-par 76s. Carter closed the day at 7-over tied for 18th while O’Dell was 9-over in a tie for 23rd.
