WVAWC wraps up filter change work

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Officials with West Virginia American Water Company say all of the carbon filters at the Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant have now been fully replaced.

According to company officials, tests of the water from those filters have shown no trace amounts of MCHM — the coal processing chemical that spilled into the Elk River on Jan. 9 and contaminated tap water in parts of nine counties.

The last of the test results were returned on Thursday.

Work to replace the filters started in April.

Since then, nearly one million pounds of activated carbon from 16 total filters has been removed and replaced with new carbon.  WVAWC officials said the water has been tested to ensure it meets all drinking water standards.
