One dead in Buckhannon after being struck by a train

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. — A person was hit and killed by a train in Buckhannon Tuesday morning.

Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m., the Buckhannon Police Department responded to a collision involving a train near Wood Street and found and found an Appalachian and Ohio train had struck an individual on the tracks.

The individual was declared dead upon the arrival of the emergency responders.

The railroad company issued a statement Tuesday evening.

“A&O and all of its employees express our deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones of the individual who was involved in the fatal accident,” the release read. “The train involved, operated by Appalachian & Ohio Railroad, originated at Grafton and was headed to Burnsville, West Virginia. It consisted of two locomotives; there were no railcars on the train at the time of the accident.  We have investigators on site and are cooperating with local authorities to determine why the accident occurred.”

The victim’s name is not being released pending family notification, nor are any other details being released as the investigation is ongoing.

The Buckhannon Police Department was assisted by Upshur County EMS, Buckhannon Fire Department, and WV State Police.
