First Tee branching out to military kids

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Golf Association’s First Tee program plans to spend this summer teaching the game of golf and the program’s core values to children of West Virginians serving in the military.

First Tee Director Jonathan Bartlett said the program began this week with 30 kids at the golf course at Coonskin Park in Charleston. He said it’s a way to give back.

“If we can help their kids while they’re overseas, introducing them to the game of golf, what we feel are great values that First Tee supports we want to do that,” Bartlett said.

The kids are being taught First Tee’s nine core values and healthy habits.

“The game of golf is fantastic and of course we teach them golf but we also want to teach them the simple things in life….honesty, integrity, perseverance,” Bartlett said.

The program will also take place later this summer in the eastern panhandle, north central West Virginia, Beckley and Greenbrier County. The program is free of charge.

“For us to give back the best way we know how, to give back through the game of golf—teaching values–and just having the kids have fun–we are happy to do it and we want to do it,” Bartlett said.
