Weston woman arrested after kids found covered in paint

WESTON, W. Va. — A woman was arrested Thursday after she was found impaired and her kids covered in paint.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department apprehended Crystal Mae Riffle, 28, and charged her with child neglect creating risk of injury.

Deputy Judd Holcomb was dispatched to Riffle’s home on a welfare check after receiving information about two young children who appeared to be unattended at the residence. Upon arrival two children under the age of 5 were playing in the yard on a trampoline while covered in green house paint.

A trail of the paint leading from the children to the wooden porch of the home, the front door and then a couch inside the home lead the officer to Riffle, who appeared to be impaired as she was unable to walk and spoke with slurred speech, according to a court filing.

The children had apparently got into the paint while Riffle was passed out.

Riffle claimed the impaired state was due to migraine medication and two Benadryl she had recently taken. However, after consenting to a blood draw at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, it was determined Riffle was under the influence of Klonopin, a benzodiazepine type of schedule IV controlled substance.

She did not have a prescription for the medication, used largely to treat epilepsy and panic disorders.

Riffle is being held in Central Regional Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bond.
