Appalachian prepares for power line project

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Appalachian Power has given the go-ahead for a new transmission line between Raleigh and Boone counties.

“It’s being relocated at the request of a coal company in order to accommodate some future mining plans. That’s something that’s about a $6.5 million project,” according to Phil Moye with Appalachian.

The company is Independence Coal. The new line is about 5. miles long and will cross between the two counties. It will open up land to mine in the future. Moye stressed the project won’t cost customers a penny. The entire bill is being picked up by Independence. Moye made it clear, customers won’t even know the work is going on.

“With a transmission line like this, we’re able to reroute power in a different manner and get it to customers in distribution lines some other way while we’re doing this work. When it’s relocated, we can put it back to the source,” explained Moye.

The goal is to get the project underway in just a few months times.

“We hope to get started at the end of 2014 and have it in service in about six months or so. It’s not a very long construction period. It’s something customers shouldn’t see an impact from,” according to Moye.

This isn’t the type of project Appalachian tackles on a daily basis but Moye said they get these requests about once every two years from different companies trying to get the most use out of their land.
