Hazelton inmate found guilty in assault of correctional officer

CLARKSBURG, W. Va. — An inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Hazelton was convicted for the assault of a correctional officer on Wednesday.

After a two-day trail, Edward C. Crow, 44, was found guilty by a federal jury before U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley on one count of assaulting a correctional officer resulting in bodily injury; one count of assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm; and one count of possession of a weapon.

He was found to have used a spear he manufactured himself to stab a correctional officer through the food slot on his cell door.

The officer suffered a puncture wound to his lower abdomen and received medical treatment at a local hospital.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brandon S. Flower and was investigated by the Special Investigative Services Staff at USP Hazelton.
