FestivALL wraps up with fun for the family

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — FestivALL 2014 wraps up this weekend. But if you haven’t had a chance to enjoy any of the activities, there’s still plenty going on through Sunday.

Larry Groce, the executive director of the 10-day Charleston-based event, said Friday and Saturday feature big performances.

“Two of our biggest events that we built FestivALL around, Blues, Brews and BBQ and Wine and All That Jazz, are produced by the Fund for the Arts and all the money goes to Fund for the Arts to fund arts in the valley,” explained Groce.

Both events take place on the lawn at the University of Charleston. Blues, Brews and BBQ is set for Friday evening, Wine and All That Jazz Saturday afternoon into the evening.

The FestivALL Catfish Display is part of the Children’s Art Fair.

For something more family friendly, there’s a weekend event focusing on West Virginia made-products.

“The Capitol Street Art Fair has more than 90 artisans downtown in tents selling their work, displaying their work,” explained Groce.

The Art Fair also features a children’s event with face painters, crafts and clowns. That gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Groce said if you can only make it to one event this FestivALL, it should be Compagnia T.P.O. and their performance of “Bleu!”

“We have something that’s very hard to describe but it’s so beautiful. Anyone with children should come and see it,” stressed Groce.

It’s an interactive media performance that involves two dancers, light, sound and digital imagery based on the ocean. There are shows at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Walker Theatre on Saturday.

Groce said FestivALL is a chance for Charleston to shine.

“It’s fun for the city. It’s fun to show off the city and for us to celebrate!”

FestivALL wraps up Sunday night with a Mountain Stage performance with St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Candi Staton, Billy Joe Shaver, The Holmes Brothers and Paul Thorn.
