Course opens for The Greenbrier Classic

GREENBRIER COUNTY, W.Va. — The Tournament Director for The Greenbrier Classic says anything can happen on the Old White Course at The Greenbrier Resort this week.

“This golf course allows people to get hot at the right time,” said Monte Ortel on Day One of the PGA Tour event.

The first round of the competition begins on Thursday.  On Monday morning, PGA Tour practice rounds were underway on the Old White Course. The first pro-am event of the week was scheduled for Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday, the practice rounds were scheduled to continue while a youth clinic was set for Tuesday afternoon.

“Everything’s in place. Everything is where it needs to be. We’ve got a great team going out, plugging a few holes out there,” Ortel said. “The excitement’s here. Everybody’s here. It’s exciting times. This is what we work all year for.”

Ortel said ticket sales have been strong with anywhere from 28,000 to 35,000 spectators possible on any given day this week. “This year is pushing the most we’ve ever had,” he said. Badges for grounds access and this week’s concerts from Maroon 5 and Jimmy Buffett are still available.
