Volunteers helping make The Greenbrier Classic happen this week

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — More than 1,000 volunteers are giving their time at The Greenbrier Resort this week as The Greenbrier Classic, a PGA Tour event, continues.

Among those volunteers is Jim Strawn from Kanawha County. He is the current “Volunteer of the Year.”

“I love golf. I’m not a good golfer. I just love the game. I appreciate sports and I just thought, ‘Wow, what a great thing for West Virginia,'” he said. He is not alone. “Folks come in from worldwide and the United States (to volunteer)….It’s like a reunion down here.”

Strawn, who works with Highland Hospital in Charleston, has been volunteering with The Greenbrier Classic for the past five years and sees himself as an ambassador for West Virginia.

He walks with the golfers to provide score updates for spectators during the competition. “I’m right with the golfer,” he said. “I stay about ten to 15, maybe, 20 feet back and, sometimes, I position myself where the gallery can see the score.”

Volunteers must work several shifts. In exchange, they receive uniforms, Tournament access for all seven days of events along with concert access plus other perks.

MetroNews “Talkline” with Hoppy Kercheval is broadcasting from Slammin’ Sammy’s at The Greenbrier Resort this week for the 2014 Greenbrier Classic.
