Great golfing weather at Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — In terms of weather, this weekend could be the kind of weekend the organizers of The Greenbrier Classic would have ordered — if they had the chance.

“Every tournament has years where they have really bad weather. This Tournament, I think, was due to have a really good weekend,” said Stewart Williams, meteorologist for the PGA Tour, on Friday’s MetroNews “Talkline.” “I’m happy for them.”

The sun was shining in the Greenbrier Valley for Friday’s Independence Day, while temperatures stayed in the 70s. On Saturday morning, the forecast was calling for a temperature of 48 degrees for the start of competition with highs topping out in the 70s later in the day.

“Sunday, it warms up a little bit more, so low 80s for the afternoon and partly cloudy,” Williams said. “All in all, (it’s) the perfect three day weekend.”

Thousands of people were expected to pour onto the grounds of The Old White Course through the weekend.

Nearby, Maroon 5 was scheduled to take the stage at 9:30 p.m. Friday for The Greenbrier Classic Concert Series at the State Fairgrounds. A show from Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band was set for 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Among the many people attending the PGA Tour event and the concerts were foster kids and their families from West Virginia. Those with the state Department of Commerce allocated a portion of their allotted tickets to the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia.

“The Children’s Home Society is so very appreciative,” said Mary White, director of development and philanthropy for the organization.

She was also a guest on MetroNews “Talkline” which was broadcasting from Slammin’ Sammy’s — a restaurant at The Greenbrier Resort — as Round Two of The Greenbrier Classic continued Friday.
