Man killed in Hampshire County crash

SPRINGFIELD, W.Va. — A man was killed and a woman injured in a July 4 motorcycle crash in Hampshire County according to information released by West Virginia State Police Monday.

Troopers said at just before 7 p.m. Friday emergency crews dispatched to a crash on Clarence Taylor Road near Springfield. Troopers said Ryan Smith, 35, and his sidecar passenger, Sarah Taylor, 31, were heading southbound when it is believed Smith lost control negotiating a curve. Smith then traveled off an embankment and over the roadway edge. Both were thrown from the motorcycle and landed on a rocky area off the bank of the South Branch of the Potomac River.

Troopers said Smith died as a result of his injuries. Taylor remained hospitalized Monday at the West Maryland Medical Center.

Investigators said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
