Deep sink hole stalls Charleston traffic

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A large sink hole developed at a busy intersection in downtown Charleston Wednesday evening.

The hole came open right in the middle of the intersection of Quarrier and Brooks streets next to the offices of the state Public Service Commission at around 4:30.

Charleston police said the hole was at least six feet deep, 5 feet wide and 10 feet long.

Police taped off the intersection putting motorists in search of other options to get around Charleston.

The city’s Public Works Department said the hole was caused when a old clay drain pipe collapsed. Crews were filling the hole with gravel Wednesday night.
