PARKERSBURG, W.Va. — Wood County Emergency Services Director Ed Hupp said the damage from Tuesday evening’s storm was isolated to the city of Parkersburg, Washington and in outlying areas to the east on Route 47.
The winds toppled trees across the city causing 15,000 people to lose power at one time.
“We had over 200 calls of just power lines down,” Hupp said. “There were some homes where trees came down and damaged roofs. We had one injury in the city park where a 15-year-old was injured by a falling tree.”
Crews were in the city on Wednesday cleaning up the damage and getting power fully restored. Critical infrastructure like hospitals and nursing homes received the first attention.
Hupp said the storm wasn’t nearly as bad as the 2012 derecho which caused similar damage countywide.
