Headed to the Great North Woods

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Most people who take vacation do so with the attitude of shelving their job for a week. Many relate to me the joy of getting away from their work to “recharge.”

I however am unique. I’m one of those rare and fortunate individuals who has managed to land a job doing what I love. If I wasn’t reporting on hunting and fishing, I’d be…hunting and fishing. Those are what I enjoy doing, therefore when I head out on vacation next week I’ll still be here.

I made my son Hank an offer that when he graduated we’d go anywhere he wanted to go hunting or fishing. He decided our last father-son adventure before he bolts off to college next month will be fishing for smallmouth, northern pike, and walleye at a remote Canadian wilderness camp. So next week I’ll be firmly rooted at Lost Lake Wilderness Lodge. You can check out the video of their operation above.

I met the owners, Tony and Melissa Thomas, two years ago at the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show.  They invited me to come up some time and do Ram Trucks West Virginia Outdoors from there. So I called them up and the offer still stood.

The phone service at the lodge isn’t sufficient for broadcasting the show live, so in the coming week’s we’ll dedicate an entire Saturday morning to our experience there. However, I’m told the lodge does offer wireless Internet. Therefore, my plan is to share a daily blog with you here and keep you up to date on our activities.  I may even get fancy and share some pictures and video too.

As I write this, the National Weather Service is warning of a cold front which is headed this way. Cold Arctic air is expected to sweep across the Great Plains and into the northeastern United States next week dropping the normal July temperatures by 10 to 30 degrees.  I haven’t checked the forecast for Gowganda, Ontario which is the nearest town. However, I suspect  since it’s six and a half hours north of Toronto, chances are it too will feel the chill.

Note to self, pack the long underwear.  Hopefully it won’t be so bad to negatively impact the fishing. We shall see and I’ll report back to you all week about how we’re doing.
