Man takes life during standoff with police

NEWELL, W.Va. — A man shot and killed himself following a domestic dispute and standoff with police Friday night according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident happened at a residence in Newell. Investigators said it began when a man got into a fight with a woman. He allegedly used a baseball bat. She ran from the scene and police responded. A standoff then took place.

Investigators said the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man’s name was not initially released.
