Heavy rain blamed for deadly I-81 accident

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Sudden, heavy rain is being blamed for the Saturday afternoon car wreck on Interstate 81 in Berkeley County that claimed the life of one person and injured two others.

Officials said the driver of a car, heading south on I-81, lost control of the vehicle in a downpour. The car then went through the highway’s median and struck another vehicle heading north near Exit 12.

I-81 north was closed for hours on Saturday afternoon because of the wreck.  It reopened around 6 p.m.

The names of the victims were not immediately available.
