Indictments in 3 Kanawha County murder cases

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Kanawha County grand jury handed up indictments on three murder cases Friday. A total of 77 defendants were indicted on various charges by the panel.

Dunbar resident Bobby Kanode Jr., 56, was indicted in connection with the death of his girlfriend Tonya Payne. The 35-year-old Payne’s body was found on the banks of the Kanawha River in February.

St. Albans resident Jessica Woods, 36, allegedly killed her mother, Eva Woods, in February. Her body was found behind their home on West Main Street. Shawn Legg, 32, of St. Albans, was indicted on charges that he helped Woods after the murder.

The grand jury indicted D.J. Carter, 18, of South Charleston, and Mark Gaddy, 23, of Detroit, in the April shooting death of Charleston teenager Tymel McKinney. He was shot on the front porch of his home on Charleston’s West Side.

The grand jury also indicted 38-year-old Tasheem Collins and 30-year-old George Sawyer in the April shooting of well-known bouncer Jimmy Beasley. He was hospitalized for several weeks but was recently released.

All of those indicted will be arraigned in the coming weeks by Kanawha County circuit judges.
